BIAS IN ACTION

The best leaders make instant decisions based on experience, mission, vision, and intent.

IN REFERENCE TO The article "Leaders - Do You Have a Bias for Action" that I read in 2017 by Mike Ettore, with Fidelis Leadership Group. KEY POINTS

  1. With failure comes knowledge or how to succeed next time. And that's ok.

  2. The ability to make decisions

  3. Don't get stuck in "Analysis Paralysis." That will doom your organization.

MY THOUGHTS

I saved this article the moment it came out knowing at some point I would find better words to articulate how a "Bias in Action" is what I have noticed makes the difference in my students, adults, and Marines seeking opportunity in life.

Over the last 10 years since leaving the Marines

I am amazed at how many Marines I have met who are in public education or successful in their fields who often speak about that drive, determination, and discipline the United States Marine Corps teaches that employers notice that open doors for them.

I wasn't the most educated or experienced Lance Corporal when I was in the Marines, but the environment (Organizational Culture) expected me to "adapt and overcome" at every moment when faced with adversity to get what I needed and complete a mission.

This mindset gave me the ability not to be stuck in "analysis paralysis" and continue forward so long as my decisions reflected the intent of the mission. This is what I believe to be the reason why Marines are so successful.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2011, of the Fortune 500 companies, 163 CEOs were enlisted Marines? When 1/3 of the top performing companies in the U.S. are run by Marines, that says something about the kind of leaders our organization creates.

This is why I believe the United States Marine Corps needs to double down in its DOD Skillbridge efforts in conjunction with the 2030 Manpower vision to allow some of this talent to come back into the communities who need this leadership and bias in action.
